Isn’t there just physical hunger?

Happy Aloha Friday!

When you think about the definition of the word “hunger,” what typically comes to mind?

My guess is that your first thought would be the physical sensation of hunger in the body.

This week, I want to mention other types of hunger that are so important to consider!

Why is it important for us to talk about all types of hunger? Focusing only on physical hunger will not leave you satisfied because there are so many other reasons why we eat. Your body gives you cues in other ways to meet all of its needs.

What are the three main types of hunger?

1. Physical hunger – physical symptoms of hunger in the body. This can be different cues for everyone, but signs may include stomach growling and physical sensations of the “fullness” of the stomach. We want to be sure that we are nourishing our body consistently so that we do not get to a level of hunger where we feel physically unwell.

2. “Mouth” hunger – this involves cravings to eat foods that sound yummy. It is important to listen to your body’s cravings – this is another tool your body uses to ensure you are getting proper nourishment.

3. Emotional hunger – you may have the urge to eat when you are experiencing certain emotions. This is a normal coping skill and is not wrong of you. Food is comforting and can be associated with positive memories and feelings. Enjoying food helps us lead a colorful and socially fulfilling life as well! We just want to be sure that this is not our only coping skill because becoming physically sick often can be very uncomfortable.

My challenge to you is to focus on observing how often you notice the different types of hunger throughout the week. Remember, no type of hunger is “better” or “worse” than any other, and all types have a place in your recovery!
